What Makes Our Mini-Split Repair Service Different

Why Fort Worth Homeowners Choose Hobbs for Mini-Split Repair

Ductless mini-split systems are efficient, zone-focused heating and cooling solutions—but when they fail, the failure mode is often different from central AC. A clogged indoor filter can freeze the coil in hours. A refrigerant leak in a 30-foot lineset goes unnoticed until cooling drops dramatically. Communication faults between the indoor and outdoor units can lock the system into a mode or shut it down entirely. That’s why mini-split repair requires specialized diagnosis. Hobbs Heating and Air has been repairing Samsung, Armstrong, Carrier, and other ductless systems since 2007.

Get Your Mini-Split Diagnosed Properly

Ready for Expert Mini-Split Repair?

A proper mini-split diagnosis tests communication between units, measures refrigerant pressures (accounting for long lineset pressure drops), checks filter condition, tests blower motor operation, and inspects the compressor-inverter function. After diagnosis, we explain what’s broken and what repair costs. No hidden surprises.

Warning Signs

Signs Your Mini-Split Needs Repair

These symptoms indicate your ductless system needs professional diagnosis and repair.

Mini-split indoor head unit showing warning signs by Hobbs Heating and Air, LLC in Fort Worth, TX

Indoor Unit Won’t Turn On or Keeps Shutting Off

You change the thermostat setting, but the head unit doesn’t respond or starts then shuts down after a few minutes. This signals a communication fault between indoor and outdoor units, a blown fuse in the indoor control board, or a failed power supply.

Cooling Drops Significantly But Unit Still Runs

The indoor head is blowing air, but it’s barely cool. The outdoor unit is running, but you’re not getting the comfort you expect. Causes: clogged indoor filter, refrigerant leak in the lineset, or a failed indoor expansion device.

Ice Buildup on Indoor Coil or Lineset

You notice frost or ice on the lineset tubing or visible ice on the indoor head. This means the coil temperature has dropped below freezing—usually from low airflow (clogged filter) or low refrigerant.

Outdoor Unit Runs But Indoor Head Doesn’t Blow Air

The outdoor compressor is running, but no air comes from the indoor head. The blower motor isn’t running, which means the motor has failed, the capacitor is bad, or the control signal isn’t reaching the indoor head.

Error Code Displayed on Remote or Wall Unit

Modern mini-splits display fault codes when something fails. Common codes: low refrigerant (pressure fault), communication loss between units, inverter overheat, or sensor failure. The error code tells us exactly where to look.

Our Repair Process

How We Repair Your Mini-Split System

Our mini-split repair process is systematic and transparent. We test communication, pressures, electrical continuity, and component operation before we quote you anything.

We ask you to describe the problem: Does the head turn on? Does it respond to the remote? What does the outdoor unit do when you ask for cooling? We cycle the remote through modes (cooling, heating, off) while observing the indoor head and listening to the outdoor unit. If the head doesn’t respond, we’re looking at a communication fault or control-board failure.

We connect a manifold gauge to the service ports on the outdoor unit and measure high-side and low-side pressures. On a mini-split, we account for the lineset length—a 40-foot lineset will have different pressure readings than a 15-foot one, even with the same refrigerant charge. Low pressure in both directions suggests a leak in the lineset or indoor coil.

We check the signal wires between outdoor and indoor units for continuity and proper voltage. We might use a multimeter to test for shorts or opens in the wiring. We also check the remote control batteries and the receiver in the indoor head. Communication faults are a leading cause of mini-split shutdown.

We check the indoor filter condition. A clogged filter restricts airflow, causes the indoor coil to freeze, and shuts down the system. We test the blower motor with a continuity tester or by listening for motor hum when the head calls for cooling. We check the capacitor (if accessible) and test the thermostat input to the control board.

We check the outdoor unit for obvious damage, debris blocking the coil, or loose connections. We listen for compressor operation—is it humming (trying to start) or silent? We test voltage at the compressor terminal and the control board. On inverter systems, we check for overheat shutdowns or low-voltage lockouts.

Based on pressures, communication tests, component checks, and visual inspection, we tell you what’s broken: “The indoor filter is clogged and the coil froze. Replace the filter and run the system for 30 minutes with the coil thawed, and you’ll be back to full cooling.” Or: “There’s a pinhole leak in the lineset near the head.” No surprises.

Mini-Split Repair FAQs

Answering Your Mini-Split Questions

Low airflow (usually a clogged filter), low refrigerant (lineset leak), or a failed indoor expansion device are the most common causes. Check if the filter is clogged and replace it. If cooling still doesn’t return after filter replacement, measure refrigerant pressures and check for lineset leaks. We can diagnose and fix this in a single visit.

Signs: cooling output drops gradually over weeks or months, pressures read low on both sides when we measure them, or ice forms on the lineset tubing or indoor coil. We use an electronic leak detector to locate leaks—even tiny pinhole leaks show up. Once found, we repair or replace the lineset.

Yes. Most indoor heads have an accessible filter behind a removable panel. Check your manual for the correct filter type and replacement interval. We recommend replacing every 30–90 days depending on usage and dust levels. A clogged filter is the most common mini-split problem, and the easiest to prevent.

Error codes are manufacturer-specific, but common ones include: low refrigerant (pressure fault), communication loss between units, inverter overheat, or sensor failure. Each code points to a specific problem. We can decode your code and locate the fault. Bring the code or take a photo of the display when you call.

Lineset repair depends on leak location and size. Pinhole leaks near the outdoor or indoor unit can be patch-repaired with epoxy (shorter-term) or soldered (more durable). Leaks in the middle of a 40-foot lineset are harder to access; we may recommend full lineset replacement. We’ll assess and give you options.

The remote batteries might be dead (most common). If new batteries don’t work, the receiver in the indoor head might have failed, or the signal wire might be broken. We’ll test the receiver and wiring to isolate the problem. Control-board failure is rare but possible. We diagnose and repair what’s needed.

It depends on the error. Some faults (low refrigerant, communication loss) cause the system to shut down automatically—running it could damage the compressor. Others (sensor failures) might allow the system to run but provide incorrect readings. We recommend calling for diagnosis before continuing to operate.

Compressor replacement is the most expensive mini-split repair. We can give you a quote after diagnosis, but it varies based on compressor size and type. We’ll also discuss whether replacement makes sense for your system’s age and condition. Compare the repair cost to the cost of a new mini-split unit.

We guarantee our workmanship for 2 years on any repair. If a component we replaced fails due to our installation, we fix it free. Manufacturers offer limited warranties on parts (typically 1–5 years depending on brand). We can help you register the system with the manufacturer to extend warranty coverage.

We recommend professional servicing twice yearly: once before summer cooling season and once before winter if you heat with the system. Servicing includes filter replacement, coil cleaning, pressure checks, and communication testing. This prevents most repairs. If you replace your filter quarterly and keep the outdoor unit clear of debris, you’ll extend the system’s life significantly.
