Warning Signs

Signs Your Furnace Needs Immediate Repair

Don’t wait for a complete breakdown. These warning signs indicate your furnace needs professional attention before it fails completely.

Furnace Runs But Won’t Heat the House

The blower runs and you hear ignition, but no heat comes from the vents. This signals failed ignition, no gas reaching the burner, a cracked heat exchanger, or a tripped safety switch. We’ll test gas pressure and ignition to identify which. If the heat exchanger is cracked, that’s a carbon monoxide safety hazard — we’ll shut the system down and recommend replacement.

No Ignition or Clicking Sounds With No Flame

You hear repeated clicking from the furnace but the pilot or burner doesn’t light. This means the ignitor is dead (most common), the gas valve is stuck, or the flame sensor isn’t detecting a flame. Failed ignitors are simple replacements that get heat back in hours.

Furnace Runs Then Shuts Off After a Few Minutes

The furnace cycles on, runs for 5–10 minutes, then shuts off. This signals a tripped limit switch, a failed thermostat, inadequate airflow from a clogged filter, or low gas pressure. Most of these are quick diagnostics. A blocked filter is often the culprit.

Yellow or Orange Flame Instead of Blue

A healthy burner flame is blue. Yellow or orange means incomplete combustion (poor air-to-gas ratio or contaminated air intake). This creates carbon monoxide risk and means the burner or intake needs inspection or cleaning. Don’t ignore this; we’ll diagnose and fix immediately.

Loud Rumbling, Squealing, or Banging Sounds

A loud rumble at startup signals delayed ignition. Squealing means a blower bearing wearing out or a belt slipping. Banging indicates thermostat issues, air in the ducts, or loose furnace components. Loud sounds always warrant professional diagnosis before something catastrophic fails.

Our Repair Process

How We Diagnose and Repair Your Furnace

Our repair process is methodical and transparent. We diagnose first, explain what we find, get your approval, then perform the repair.

When you call, we ask: What’s the furnace doing? Any sounds? Is the thermostat set to heat? Did it stop suddenly or gradually lose heat? These details tell us what to focus on during diagnosis. We also ask about recent service history, past repairs, and how old the furnace is. If the furnace is 20+ years old and this is the first major repair, replacement might be more economical.

Before we touch the furnace, we verify the thermostat is calling for heat and set to appropriate temperature. We check if the thermostat has power (battery or wired). We inspect visible safety switches and reset buttons on the furnace itself. Sometimes a tripped safety switch or dead thermostat battery is the whole problem — identified and fixed in 5 minutes.

This is the critical diagnostic step. We connect a manometer to measure gas pressure at the furnace — should be 3–4 inches of water column for most furnaces. Low pressure means the regulator is failing or the gas supply is restricted. We test the ignitor (should glow red hot or spark consistently). If ignition is failing, we measure voltage at the ignitor and check the flame sensor.

We visually inspect the heat exchanger (the metal box where combustion heats air) for cracks or rust. A cracked heat exchanger is a carbon monoxide safety hazard — we shut the system down immediately and recommend replacement. We also check the burner flame color (blue is good; yellow/orange means combustion problem). We measure draft and exhaust gas temperature to confirm safe combustion.

We check if the blower motor runs smoothly or makes noise. We feel airflow at the supply vents — weak airflow signals a clogged filter, blocked return, or failed blower motor. We inspect the air filter and ductwork for obvious blockages. Poor airflow often causes the limit switch to trip (safety shutdown), which then looks like a system failure.

Based on tests and inspection, we tell you exactly what’s broken and what we recommend: “Your ignitor has failed. We can replace it in an hour for $XXX.” Or: “Your heat exchanger has a crack. The furnace is not safe to operate. Replacement is recommended.” No surprises. You approve the repair before we start.

If replacement is smarter economics, we’ll show you that too.

Answering Your Questions

FAQs About Furnace Repair

Repair costs depend on what’s broken. Simple fixes like ignitor or thermostat repair cost less than moderate repairs like blower motor or gas valve work. Complex repairs like heat exchanger replacement represent the highest cost. We provide a detailed quote after diagnosis so you know the cost before approving work.

Repair makes sense if your furnace is under 15 years old and the repair cost is under 50% of replacement cost. If your furnace is 18+ years old, the repair is expensive, or it’s had multiple issues, replacement often provides better long-term value. We’ll walk you through the economics during your repair visit.

Simple repairs (ignitor, capacitor, thermostat reset) take 30 minutes to 1 hour. Moderate repairs (blower motor, gas valve) take 2–3 hours. Complex repairs (heat exchanger replacement, major component work) might require a second appointment if parts need ordering. We’ll give you an honest timeline after diagnosis.

Small surface cracks can sometimes be sealed, but structural cracks that go through the walls are a carbon monoxide safety hazard. We shut down the furnace immediately and recommend replacement. No repair is worth risking your family’s safety. Heat exchanger cracks are a sign it’s time for a new furnace.

Multiple causes: failed ignitor (no flame), no gas reaching the burner, a clogged air filter restricting airflow (which triggers limit switch shutdown), thermostat not calling correctly, or a limit switch that’s stuck open. We’ll diagnose which during a service call and fix it.

The limit switch is a safety control that shuts off the burner if the heat exchanger temperature gets too high (to prevent carbon monoxide and fire risk). It’s supposed to cycle on/off with normal heating. If it’s constantly shutting the system down, it either needs replacement or the issue is something else (clogged filter, poor airflow) causing excessive heat.

We recommend an annual fall tune-up before heating season starts — this catches problems (worn ignitors, carbon buildup, airflow issues) before winter arrives. If your furnace is over 15 years old, consider twice-yearly service (fall and spring) to monitor aging components. Join our maintenance plan and we’ll schedule you automatically.

Modern furnaces use electronic ignition, not pilot lights, but they still require ignition to function. If ignition is failing, the furnace won’t run. Don’t try to light a pilot light yourself — it’s a safety hazard. Call us for diagnosis and repair.

A faint gas smell at startup is normal (as the burner lights). A strong, continuous gas smell means a leak. Shut off the furnace immediately, open windows, and call us or your gas utility. Do not ignore gas smell — it’s a safety hazard.

Most furnace warranties cover manufacturer defects (broken parts) for 5–10 years. Hobbs guarantees our installation labor for 2 years — if we installed your furnace and there’s a problem with our work, we cover it. If you bought the furnace elsewhere or installed it yourself, warranty coverage depends on the manufacturer and how old the furnace is.
