Our Installation Process

How We Install Your Ductless Mini-Split System

Our installation process follows manufacturer specifications, EPA refrigerant-handling rules, and Texas electrical codes. Here’s what to expect from design to final commissioning.

We walk through your home and identify where you want to add comfort: sunroom, bonus room, bedroom, garage, workshop, or multiple zones across different areas. We measure the square footage of each zone and note the room’s insulation, window area, and sun exposure. We identify optimal spots for indoor unit mounting (wall, ceiling, or corner) that balance aesthetics, airflow, and noise concerns. We walk your exterior to find the best location for the outdoor compressor unit—typically ground-level, wall-mounted, or roof-positioned, with clearance for airflow and consideration for noise impact on neighbors.

Using the zone measurements and sun exposure data, we calculate the cooling and heating capacity (in BTU) needed for each zone. A single-zone sunroom might need 12,000 BTU; a three-zone system might total 36,000 BTU. From there, we determine the outdoor unit size and confirm that one outdoor compressor can support all indoor zones without exceeding its rated capacity. We recommend specific Samsung or Armstrong models that match your zones, budget, and efficiency goals (SEER 16–24+ for premium efficiency).

The outdoor unit requires dedicated electrical power—typically 15–30 amps depending on system size. We inspect your electrical panel to confirm capacity. If needed, we coordinate with a licensed electrician to add a new breaker and disconnect switch. This step is non-negotiable for safety and code compliance. Most Fort Worth homes have adequate panel space, but older homes with 100-amp or 150-amp service sometimes need a panel upgrade, which we’ll identify during your estimate.

Installation day begins with routing refrigerant lines (typically 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch copper with insulation) from the outdoor unit to each indoor zone. We drill small holes (usually less than 1 inch) through exterior walls, attic walls, or between studs, then run lines with condensate drain lines (water from the cooling coil) and electrical control wiring in a bundle. Each indoor unit is mounted securely—wall units are bracket-mounted at the manufacturer’s recommended height, ceiling units are installed in the appropriate location, and floor units are positioned for optimal airflow to that zone.

The outdoor compressor unit is positioned on a level concrete pad or mounting bracket with clearance from walls, fences, and vegetation. We connect the refrigerant lines to the outdoor unit’s service valves, check all connections for leaks using a nitrogen pressure test (to code), and then recover nitrogen and prepare for refrigerant charging. Electrical power lines are routed from your panel to the outdoor unit with a disconnect switch and proper breaker protection.

This is the critical commissioning step for mini-splits. We charge the system to the manufacturer’s specifications using calibrated scales and recover any excess to prevent overcharging (a common cause of early failure). We then test each zone independently: confirm that the refrigerant is flowing properly through each indoor unit’s expansion device, verify superheat and subcooling readings (thermodynamic performance data), and confirm that zone thermostat controls are switching each indoor unit on/off as intended.

Modern mini-splits come with a dedicated thermostat for each zone—some are simple wall units, others are Wi-Fi enabled and smartphone controllable. We program each thermostat with your comfort preferences, explain scheduling (so you can cool only occupied rooms), walk through the control app if applicable, and clarify emergency heating options. We provide warranty documentation, recommend a seasonal maintenance schedule (filter cleaning and professional tune-up), and explain what to watch for (unusual noise, uneven cooling between zones, refrigerant smell).

Let’s Get Started

Design Your Perfect Zone Comfort System

A ductless mini-split system gives you flexibility, efficiency, and room-by-room control that traditional HVAC can’t match. Whether you’re adding comfort to an addition, replacing inefficient window units, or just want to cool the rooms you use while leaving others at a lower temperature, a mini-split is the smart choice.

Hobbs Heating and Air has been installing zoned comfort systems since 2007. We start with a free site survey where we map your zones, recommend system size and placement, review equipment options, and provide transparent pricing. Our technicians are factory-trained on Samsung and Armstrong mini-splits, certified for EPA refrigerant handling, and familiar with Fort Worth’s climate challenges—humidity, extreme summer heat, and occasional winter freezing. Financing is available through Wells Fargo, and our maintenance plans keep your system running at peak efficiency for 15–20 years.

Answering Your Questions

Mini-Split Installation FAQs

Most residential mini-split systems support 2–5 indoor zones on a single outdoor unit. The practical limit is usually four zones, beyond which you’d add a second outdoor unit. During your survey, we recommend the optimal configuration based on your home’s layout and refrigerant line distances. Multi-zone systems are more affordable than installing separate window units or multiple single-zone systems.

Yes—a single-zone system with a 12,000 or 18,000 BTU outdoor unit can sometimes support additional indoor units later. However, the outdoor unit must have capacity, and you’ll need to add refrigerant and conduct new electrical and lineset work. We discuss future expansion during your initial design so we can size the outdoor unit appropriately if you think you’ll expand.

No, that’s the whole point. Mini-splits deliver heated or cooled air through thin refrigerant lines, not ductwork. If you have existing ductwork in your home, the mini-split operates independently—you can have both and control each separately.

Costs vary by zone count, equipment brand, and installation complexity. A single-zone system typically costs less than replacing central AC; a three-zone system approaches or exceeds central AC replacement cost. We provide a detailed quote during your consultation. Financing is available through Wells Fargo for qualified applicants.

The outdoor compressor is about the size of a large air conditioning condenser (24–36 inches tall). You’ll see and hear it. However, modern units are relatively quiet (40–50 decibels, like a quiet conversation). We position units away from windows and neighbors when possible. Some customers add a low-profile screen or fence section for aesthetics without restricting airflow.

Single-zone systems are typically done in one day (4–6 hours). Multi-zone systems (3–5 zones) take 2–3 days depending on line routing complexity and ductwork work. We confirm the timeline during your estimate.

Yes. Mini-splits use heat pump technology to extract warmth from outdoor air and deliver it indoors—even in cold weather. Fort Worth’s winter lows (typically 30–50°F) are well within mini-split operating range. Heating efficiency drops in very cold weather, but that’s rare here. Many customers pair a mini-split with their existing furnace for backup on extreme cold days.

Yes. HVAC installation, electrical work, and refrigerant handling all require permits and inspections. We handle the permit application, inspections, and code compliance. Permit cost is included in our installation quote.

Samsung and Armstrong typically offer 5–10 year warranties on compressors and 1–5 years on parts, depending on the model. Hobbs guarantees our workmanship for 2 years. Some customers choose extended warranties at installation. We’ll walk through all options in your quote.

Yes. Unlike ductwork retrofit, mini-split installation doesn’t require major structural changes. We route lines through exterior walls or attic spaces with minimal disruption. Historic homes, plaster walls, and tight spaces are not obstacles—they’re actually where mini-splits shine.
